Are You the Bottleneck? 5 Signs Your Team Is Waiting on You

If every decision runs through you, your team is waiting on you. Five signs you might be the bottleneck and three moves to clear it this week.

You are good at the work. That is how you became a manager. But the habits that earned the promotion can quietly turn you into the slowest part of your team’s process. When every decision, question, and fix runs through you, your team is not running. You are.

Here are five signs the bottleneck might be you, and three moves to start clearing it this week.

Sign 1: Work stalls when you are out

If a day off means a pile of waiting tasks, decisions were never really handed over. A team that can only move with your approval is borrowing your time instead of building its own.

Sign 2: Your inbox is full of “quick questions”

Questions only you can answer are a signal. Either people do not know what they are allowed to decide, or they have learned that asking is safer than owning the call.

Sign 3: You fix it yourself because it is faster

It is faster today. It is slower every week after, because nobody else learns how. Doing the work your team could do feels productive, but it protects them from the practice that builds capability.

Sign 4: Your calendar is all reaction

Ask how much of last week was reactive work you could have delegated or dropped. When there is no protected time to plan, coach, or think, the people you lead get your leftovers.

Sign 5: Your team brings problems, not options

This is the quiet one. If people arrive with a problem and wait for your answer, they have learned you will solve it. Over time, they stop trying.

Three moves to start this week

  • Hand off one decision. Pick a recurring call you make that someone else could own. Say it plainly: “You own this decision. You can decide within these limits. Check in with me if this happens. Let’s review on this date.”
  • Ask two questions before you answer. Try “What have you tried?” and “What options do you see?” You will be surprised how often the answer is already in the room.
  • Protect one 60-minute block. Put it on the calendar for strategic work, and remove or delegate one lower-value activity to make room.

Your move

Do not try to fix all five at once. Choose the sign that stung the most, take one action before Friday, and notice what your team does with the space.
